The major problem with GA is that it is expensive relative to its benefits. Piston engines in GA are early 1950s technology, are grossly inefficient (5L engine O-360 putting out just 180 HP? You gotta be kidding), consume expensive fuels and require more and expensive maintenance than auto engines because they are so old fashioned. Seriously, carburetors in the 21st century? Points and condensers for ignition in the year 2011? Gimme a break! And in the mid range singles where there is fuel injection, it is the mechanical fuel injection Daimler Benz invented for the 1951 Le Mans race.

The technology that gives cars 20-30 MPG is unknown in GA.

As an example, for my wife an myself to fly from New York to Buffalo via Jet Blue, the round trip cost is $200. Renting a 172 would cost at least twice as much and take twice as long to get there.

Yes, I am considering manufacturing and marketing this style of mounting plate. Have to find an efficient way to do it, or else it will cost $1000 each based on how long it takes me to do one by hand!

Hi Jim,
I used a 12V to 19V DC converter and spliced in the proprietary (&%#&)#!!) HP connector for the Slate 500 from another 110 V power supply. Kind of expensive hack since there is no 3rd party source for the connector.

I'm working on making a dimensioned template to post. I am also looking into manufacturing and marketing this mounting plate design, since it is easily converted to popular sizes like the iPAD.

Brian,
Slick rig. Do you have a template for the mounting plate? Are you using the ac inverter for power? I bought an hp slate to use with AWM Pro. I've been using an AWM ATC, before that the ipaq 4700. These systems have gotten me to 48 states.
